Nagare Labs is developing Z2RAM, a new memory technology designed to combine SRAM-like speed with much higher density. The Register reports that the company has raised $5 million and says its first lab prototypes could offer more than five times SRAM’s density in the same space.
Why it mattersThat could matter for AI accelerators, where memory capacity and bandwidth can limit how much work a chip handles. But Z2RAM is still at the lab-prototype stage: Nagare is seeking a fabrication partner, hopes to sample working memory tiles within four years, and targets production within a decade. The promise is striking; the timetable is a reminder that semiconductor breakthroughs have a long way to travel from a clean room to a server rack.
Discuss: Should AI hardware makers back emerging memory designs early, or wait until they have proved they can be manufactured reliably?
