Google’s older Nano Banana 2 image model is reported to shut down on 29 October, with developers directed towards Nano Banana 2.1 instead. Shattered.io’s 26 October comparison says the change also removes the 512-pixel option, so existing workflows built around tiny, cheap images may need adjusting.
Why it mattersThe article reports lower output prices for the newer model, but says input costs have risen. Teams using long prompts or lots of reference images may not see the saving they expect. A small test with real workloads looks wiser than trusting a tidy price headline.
Discuss: When an AI service retires a model, how much notice should developers reasonably expect before they have to migrate?
