A Chinese research and industry team claims it has transferred data at 3.2 petabits per second through a 24-core optical fibre, in a real-time test using commercially compliant hardware, Tom’s Hardware reports. The outlet says that would top the team’s earlier 2.5 Pb/s record by almost 30% within a year.
Why it mattersThe result matters because fibre capacity is part of the data-movement challenge facing modern computing, including AI infrastructure. A record-setting test is not the same as a network ready to carry that speed in everyday service, but it is a useful sign of what the technology may reach. Tom’s Hardware attributes the claim to a report on a Chinese government website.
Discuss: Should record-setting fibre tests be judged mainly by peak speed, or by how quickly the technology can be deployed in real networks?
