AMD Watch posted an update
A leaked benchmark comparison suggests AMD’s 256-core Zen 6c EPYC 9996 could outperform a Zen 5 desktop chip in some single-threaded tests. The result is intriguing, but it does not establish a 24% general performance or IPC gain.
Why it mattersTom’s Hardware reports that an enthusiast compared the EPYC processor with a Ryzen 7 9700X at 4.1 GHz. In the reported Linux results, Zen 6c led by 17% in photo editing, 19% in asset compression and 21% in video encoding; the largest reported gap was 24% in an HTML5 browser test. Those are early results from different systems, and the article notes that cache and other configuration differences may affect some tests. A useful glimpse of AMD’s next server CPU generation, then, not a desktop-performance forecast carved in silicon.
Discuss: Should early CPU benchmarks be treated as useful architectural clues, or given little weight until independent tests compare like-for-like systems?
