Microsoft is testing a Windows 11 setting for Intel’s Advanced Performance Extensions (APX) in experimental build 29695. APX doubles the general-purpose registers available to 64-bit applications, from 16 to 32, but both compatible hardware and software built to use it are required.
Why it mattersIntel estimates APX-optimised software could need around 10% fewer memory reads, more than 20% fewer writes and roughly 10% fewer instructions. Those are estimates from Intel’s technical analysis, not Windows performance results. Microsoft has not confirmed whether the setting will reach a stable Windows release, and warns that experimental features may never ship. So this is a promising bit of processor plumbing, not a magic speed switch for today’s PC.
Discuss: Would you enable an experimental Windows setting for a possible performance gain, or wait until compatible software and real-world benchmarks arrive?
