A University of South Florida team is using AI to help locate possible breeding grounds for dengue-carrying mosquitoes in Florida. The system combines satellite images with weather patterns and known breeding sites, then passes likely locations to the state for eradication efforts.

Why it matters

Just the News reports that Benjamin Jacob, a USF professor, is leading the work. It offers a practical use for AI: directing attention towards places that may otherwise be difficult to spot quickly. The report describes the system’s approach, not evidence that it has reduced infections.

Discuss: Should public health teams use AI to prioritise where they look for mosquito breeding sites, or is that decision too important to make without stronger field evidence?
