AI could help smaller teams build games they could not otherwise tackle, according to veteran Square Enix developers interviewed by Famitsu. They see a possible role for it in prototyping, where quicker experiments could leave more time to test and refine ideas.

Why it matters

But Final Fantasy director Yoshinori Kitase says people still need the skill to take an idea from “0 to 1”. Producer Kouichi Ishii adds that a polished game made with AI alone could lack a human touch, as Kotaku reports from the interview. That is a more grounded debate than asking whether AI will make games: where does it genuinely help, and where does the creative judgement still have to come from people?

Discuss: Should AI-made prototypes be judged mainly by whether they help teams create better games, or by how much creative work they replace?
