Valve’s Steam policy requires developers to disclose when AI is used to create content that ships in a game and is seen by players, Bounding Into Comics reports. The rule covers things such as artwork, sound, writing and localisation, but not, according to the report’s account of IGN, AI used for efficiency gains.
Why it mattersEpic chief Tim Sweeney calls the disclosure political, arguing that developers could face backlash for it. Critics quoted in the report say players have a right to know what they are buying. Transparency: useful information, or an invitation to another internet argument? On this evidence, it may be both.
Discuss: Should game studios have to disclose AI-generated content players encounter, or does that requirement unfairly put developers in the firing line?
