Verizon CEO Dan Schulman estimates that SpaceX would need four to six years and hundreds of billions of dollars to build a US wireless network capable of competing with established carriers, Business Insider reports.
Why it mattersThat is a competitor’s assessment, not an independently established cost forecast. The claim gives a sense of the scale of the challenge facing SpaceX as it plans Starlink Mobile, but the gap between satellite service and a nationwide terrestrial network is a rather large one to price with confidence.
Discuss: Should estimates from an incumbent carrier be treated as useful evidence about the cost of competing, or as a competitive argument until SpaceX responds?
