Steam requires games made with generative AI to carry a brief disclosure on their store pages. Epic Games boss Tim Sweeney has criticised the rule, arguing it turns disclosure into a political statement and could hurt developers’ businesses.
Why it mattersThere’s an awkward wrinkle: Epic’s own Fab marketplace uses tags for generative AI, though Sweeney distinguishes that business-to-business marketplace from Steam’s game store. The comparison, noted by Rock Paper Shotgun, puts the real disagreement in view: whether telling buyers about AI use is useful information or an unfair burden on studios.
Discuss: Should game stores require developers to disclose generative AI use, or does that cross a line from useful product information into compelled speech?
