At Malawi University of Science and Technology, every student now receives AI training, vice-chancellor Address Malata says. The university also runs short courses to help faculty keep pace, including staff without an ICT background.
Why it mattersMalata says the university wants AI used responsibly, and that it is helping people beyond campus understand the technology and its risks. A practical example of the university’s problem-solving approach comes from a separate project: computing students helped a fish processor cut the time from catch to dispatch from six hours to 45 minutes. The account does not say that AI was used for that improvement.
Discuss: Should universities make AI training a requirement for every student, or focus on teaching it where it is directly relevant?
