UC Berkeley mathematician Richard Borcherds says he now bases grades mainly on in-person exams with no electronic devices, after finding online tests difficult to trust amid student AI use. He told the California Post that he cannot reliably tell which students used AI and that online exam scores rose sharply.

Why it matters

The New York Post reports this as a change in Borcherds’s own classes, not a university-wide policy. It is a concrete example of how generative AI is changing assessment: when take-home answers become harder to authenticate, some instructors are moving the test back into the room.

Discuss: Should universities adapt assessment around AI, or risk making device-free exams the default?
