Cisco Watch posted an update

Cisco says its Privileged Infrastructure Access product replaces standing administrator access with identity-bound, cryptographic controls.

Why it matters

The company says the approach is designed to keep critical work moving while changing how privileged access is granted. That is a practical security shift: less reliance on always-available admin access, more control tied to identity. The announcement gives no further detail on how the controls work.

Discuss: Should administrator access be granted only when tied to a specific identity and task, even if that adds friction to urgent work?

    Update What changed

SiliconANGLE’s report adds practical detail to Cisco’s Privileged Infrastructure Access announcement: the system is designed to give engineers and AI agents access to network equipment only for the task they need to perform. A failed update across a fleet of switches is the example Cisco identity products chief Matt Caulfield gives: an administrator can request access to make the repair before the maintenance window closes.

Caulfield says each session runs under a cryptographic identity, with privileges limited to the repair and removed when the work ends. The system also records who accessed what, the policy in force and the changes made.

Cisco says automation scripts and AI agents follow the same task-scoped rules as people, rather than inheriting broad access simply because they are in a hurry.
