Clio has asked a Virginia federal court to declare that it does not have to renew a case-law data-feed agreement with Ross Intelligence, Law360 reports. The feed was once shared with the AI legal-research platform, which Clio says stopped making its annual $50,000 payments in 2020, shortly before shutting down.
Why it mattersThe filing puts a concrete dispute over legal data and AI research back in view. Clio’s position is a claim in court, not a ruling; the report’s excerpt does not include Ross’s response. In legal AI, access to case law is rather more than a footnote.
Discuss: When an AI legal-research service closes, who should bear responsibility for its unpaid data agreements: the service, its data suppliers, or neither?
