Apple has switched on Google’s SynthID watermarking for images made with Image Playground and some edits in iOS 27.2. It is a practical step towards identifying AI-made or altered images, though there is no built-in iPhone option to check for the watermark.
Why it mattersMacRumors says edits made with Extend and Reframe showed watermarks in its tests, while Clean Up results depended on the size of the edit. Small changes did not add one; larger ones did. To check an image, users need Google’s SynthID Detector website, rather than a button in Photos. A watermark with a few asterisks, then.
Discuss: Should image apps offer an easy way to check AI watermarks themselves, or is a separate detector a reasonable trade-off?
