A new open-source keyboard project lets makers rearrange individual keys into custom layouts, with each key containing its own RISC-V microcontroller. The design connects neighbouring keys with magnets and pogo pins, making the keyboard modular down to the switches.
Why it mattersThe Register reports that MIT student Nathan Alspaugh has spent about 100 hours on the project. A full-sized build could cost around $900 with the current assembled boards, so this is more intriguing maker project than bargain keyboard. Still, it shows how far customisable hardware can go when every key gets its own little computer.
Discuss: Would you build a keyboard this modular, or is a $900 price tag too much for custom layouts?
