Australia’s Signals Directorate says cyber incidents are rising as frontier AI models speed up attacks. Its latest threat report recommends updating outdated technology, changing passwords and disconnecting devices that do not need an internet connection.
Why it mattersThe agency recorded more than 1,500 cyber security incidents in 2025/26, up 20 per cent, according to The North West Star’s report of the findings. It also recommends prioritising security over access when deciding whether to keep systems connected. There’s no magic AI shield in this advice, just the familiar housekeeping that becomes easier to postpone until it really isn’t. The agency is also calling for further testing of frontier models with operators and Five Eyes countries.
Discuss: When a system is vulnerable, should organisations accept disruption by taking it offline, or keep it available while they work on a fix?
