Microsoft’s Azure Identity library for Python has released version 1.27.0, adding support for workload identity binding in AKS environments. It also fixes several credential and token-cache problems that could trip up developers.
Why it mattersThe new mode uses an AKS proxy to handle federated identity exchanges, addressing a limit on federated credentials per managed identity. Developers must construct WorkloadIdentityCredential directly and set enableazureproxy=True; the mode is not supported through DefaultAzureCredential. The release also fixes Azure Developer CLI error parsing and token-cache issues affecting macOS and asynchronous on-behalf-of credentials. The fixes are useful housekeeping, though the AKS addition is the headline change for teams managing workload identities.
Discuss: Should identity libraries make specialised workload features available through a default credential chain, or is keeping them explicit the safer choice?
