AI may disrupt recorded music, but the club and the DJ could be harder to displace. Music lawyer Cliff Fluet argued at Amsterdam Dance Event that electronic music’s live scene and direct connection with fans offer a buffer, Billboard reports.
Why it mattersFluet’s broader point was that power in music increasingly belongs to whoever owns the fan relationship. He pointed to electronic music’s established direct-to-fan model as something the wider industry could learn from. It’s an industry argument, not proof that live music is immune to AI. But it puts a useful question beyond the usual panic over generated tracks: is the lasting value in the music, or in the community around it?
Discuss: Will AI make live music and direct fan communities more valuable, or can generated music weaken those advantages too?
