Theft of equipment bound for US data-centre projects has caused more than $100 million in losses since June, according to NBC reporting cited by Futurism. Two reported loads alone included $13 million in missing equipment in Georgia and a $10 million server rack stolen in Texas.
Why it mattersFuturism says NBC identified roughly two dozen cargo thefts involving components since last year. An investigator quoted in the report said thieves had deliberately targeted escorts in at least one case. It is a serious security signal for the infrastructure behind AI, though the reported incidents do not establish that every stolen load was destined for AI use.
Discuss: Should data-centre operators treat equipment transport as a major security risk, or are these thefts still too isolated to change how the industry moves hardware?
