OpenAI’s Dots assistant can research ways to help users in the background, but its current access controls are not very granular, TechCrunch reports, citing product lead Alexander Embiricos. The assistant is available in ChatGPT’s desktop and mobile apps to Pro subscribers and above, with plans starting at $100 a month.
Why it mattersDots can connect to a user’s calendar, email and computer. TechCrunch says it refuses read-only access to cloud drives, while Embiricos said OpenAI needs to build much finer controls. That is a useful glimpse of the bargain behind a proactive assistant: more context may make it more helpful, but users need meaningful control over what it can access. The report describes an interview, not a new product launch.
Discuss: Would you give an always-on assistant access to your email and files if it offered more precise, read-only permissions?
