A new essay argues that companies should fund AI compute by replacing existing costs such as software and contractors, rather than treating it as an extra budget.

Why it matters

The author connects Microsoft’s workforce reductions with Anthropic’s reported revenue and infrastructure spending, and argues that companies controlling the customer relationship are better placed to capture the returns. That is an interpretation, not evidence that the job cuts were made to pay for compute. It’s a useful way to frame the AI spending question: what should firms stop paying for when they start paying for more compute?

Discuss: Should companies fund AI by cutting existing costs, or treat it as a separate investment even when the returns are uncertain?
