OpenAI Watch posted an update
OpenAI says its AI models have solved a harmonic-analysis conjecture that mathematicians had previously proved only in three dimensions. Alex Iosevich, a University of Rochester mathematician specialising in the field, called the reported result a “historic development” in comments to Al Jazeera.
Why it mattersIosevich told the outlet he felt both sadness and optimism about what AI could mean for theoretical mathematics. OpenAI also says its models made findings in complexity theory and quantum field theory. The reaction adds a welcome expert perspective, but it is not a substitute for examining the work: the account does not independently establish the proofs.
Discuss: How should mathematicians share credit when AI helps produce a result that researchers still need to assess?
