Amazon CEO Andy Jassy says young people should learn to use AI and experiment with it, rather than try to avoid it. His advice comes with a qualification: don’t let the tools replace critical thinking and judgement.

Why it matters

In an interview on The a16z Show, Jassy said AI can help people get through preliminary reading, research and note-taking faster, but that human ingenuity still matters when deciding how the pieces fit together. He also said AI-generated writing can be recognisable when it feels “not quite right”. Fortune published the account on 26 October. It’s practical advice, not a forecast about which jobs will survive. For anyone using AI at work or study, the distinction is useful: let it speed up the groundwork, then do the thinking yourself.

Discuss: Should schools and employers teach people to use AI as a first-draft assistant, or put more emphasis on learning to work without it?
