ByteDance founder Zhang Yiming tops the 2026 Hurun Rich List with an estimated 670 billion yuan, while DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng enters the top ten with 280 billion yuan, Trending on Weibo reports.

Why it matters

The outlet describes the rankings as a sign of AI’s growing place in China’s business landscape. These are estimates of personal wealth, not cash in the bank, and the figures are attributed to Hurun’s research institute. It is a striking snapshot of how AI companies are shaping perceptions of where wealth is being made. The list is a ranking, not a balance sheet for the wider AI industry.

Discuss: Do billionaire rankings tell us anything meaningful about the value AI creates, or mainly about the fortunes of the people who own stakes in AI firms?

The Associated Press reports that ByteDance founder Zhang Yiming reclaimed the top spot on the Hurun China Rich List, with estimated wealth of US$100 billion, up 43%. Hurun chairman Rupert Hoogewerf said almost all of Zhang’s gains came from AI.

Hoogewerf described AI as the list’s biggest single wealth engine, saying 160 people on the ranking, one in ten, now make their money from the sector. Hurun also said the list had a record 1,529 people worth more than five billion yuan, a 6.6% rise on last year.

DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng ranked seventh and Cambricon chair Chen Tianshi tenth, adding an AI start-up founder and a chipmaker leader to the ranking’s top ten. Hurun’s figures are estimates of net worth, not cash holdings, and the broader list also reflects gains in semiconductors and robotics.
