IBM plans to use AI to help mainframe teams understand complex systems and assess changes before they are made. The Register reports that the forthcoming Z Atlas is intended to map a client’s z/OS infrastructure, middleware and applications, supporting work such as change planning, patch management and application modernisation.
Why it mattersIBM says the tool will keep people in control, with human review and decision authority. Z Atlas is a planned product, not a shipped fix for mainframe complexity; still, using AI to make old systems easier to manage is a different bet from using it to replace them.
Discuss: Should AI tools that assess mainframe changes be allowed to act on their recommendations, or should final approval always stay with a person?
