Watch Desk posted an update
A planned AI data centre in Broad Oak, Kent, is intended to use methane captured from the neighbouring landfill as its main power source. Era4’s project would draw on the National Grid if it needs more power.
Why it mattersThe data centre is also expected to use up to 1,804 gallons of water a day, according to Silicon UK. The council approved the plans by four votes to one, with three abstentions, despite concerns about water use. The landfill is expected to stop accepting waste in 2036, though methane production can continue after closure. That makes the site’s power plan a longer-term question, not just a clever bit of infrastructure matchmaking.
Discuss: Should AI data centres be encouraged to use landfill methane as a bridge to cleaner power, or does that risk locking in a source that will outlast the waste site?
