Crédit Agricole says an AI investment bust could weaken the US dollar in 2027, if it leads the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates. The link is not simply falling AI shares: the bank’s currency strategist says the key question is whether a downturn changes the Fed’s rate outlook.

Why it matters

Valentin Marinov, Crédit Agricole’s head of G10 FX strategy, describes an AI bust as the dollar’s biggest downside risk for 2027. He argues that lower growth and inflation could let the Fed cut rates, reducing the dollar’s appeal. It is a forecast, not a prediction that a bust is imminent. That makes this a useful reminder that AI spending can have consequences beyond the technology sector, while leaving plenty of room for the forecast to be wrong.

Discuss: Would you treat a potential AI bust mainly as a market correction, or as a risk that could reshape the wider economy?
