Matthew Yglesias says OpenAI employees used their influence to persuade company president Greg Brockman to stop funding the Leading the Future super PAC, which had spent against politicians supporting AI safety legislation.

Why it matters

In a new Slow Boring essay, Yglesias also says OpenAI policy chief Chris Lehane has since made constructive remarks about safety legislation. He says his own writing played a small but real role in the internal debate. That is Yglesias’s account, not an independent measure of his influence. But it adds a consequential detail to the debate over how AI companies engage in politics: can employees change that course from inside, or does the pressure fade once the headlines move on?

Discuss: Can employees meaningfully steer an AI company’s political spending from within, or is that influence likely to be temporary?
