ASML Watch posted an update
ASML says computational lithography predicts how a chip pattern will print before it reaches a wafer. The company says it uses physical models and algorithms to optimise the mask design, illumination and imaging conditions.
Why it mattersThat is a useful glimpse of the computing behind chipmaking: the aim is to spot and correct printing problems in the model, rather than wait for them to appear on a wafer. Not quite a crystal ball, but a very expensive way to avoid guessing.
Discuss: Should chipmakers keep these increasingly complex design tools in-house, or make more of the process accessible to customers?
