Watch Desk posted an update

ByteDance founder Zhang Yiming tops China’s rich list, while AI-related fortunes are part of a broader surge, the South China Morning Post reports.

Why it matters

The list counted 1,529 people worth more than 5 billion yuan (about US$750 million) as of 1 September, up 6.6% on last year and above the previous 2021 record. DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng also debuts at No 7, while Cambricon’s Chen Tianshi enters the top ten. A tidy snapshot of AI’s growing place in China’s wealth rankings, though a rich list is a measure of fortunes, not proof of what caused them.

Discuss: How much should AI’s economic impact be judged by the wealth it creates, rather than the products and jobs it delivers?

Malay Mail, citing AFP and the Hurun China Rich List, puts DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng at number seven with an estimated fortune of US$41.7 billion. The report says he is one of 263 newcomers, many from AI, semiconductor and robotics industries.

ByteDance founder Zhang Yiming reclaimed the top spot with an estimated US$99.7 billion, a record for the list, overtaking Nongfu Spring founder Zhong Shanshan. The report also says ByteDance’s AI chatbot Doubao had nearly 420 million monthly active users, well ahead of domestic rivals.

Those figures add a sharper picture of the companies and founders behind the record-rich list: alongside DeepSeek and chipmaker Cambricon, ByteDance’s consumer AI reach is part of the story. Hurun researcher Rupert Hoogewerf says 60 per cent of the top 100 made their fortunes in sectors targeted by China’s technology-development plan.
