Watch Desk posted an update
Mazda is rolling out Google’s Gemini assistant to the new CX-5 in Europe as an over-the-air update. Drivers can use it for navigation, music, messages and selected vehicle controls, including adjusting the climate by voice.
Why it mattersThe rollout covers 12 European language variants. Owners must sign in to a Google Account; some features work offline, but the full set needs a data connection. Eligible owners who sign up to Mazda Connected Services get the data services free for three years, after which using a phone’s data plan may add cost, Automotive World reports. It is a concrete example of software adding features after a car has been sold, with the familiar catch that the assistant arrives bundled with account and connectivity requirements.
Discuss: Would you welcome a voice assistant added to your car after purchase, or keep these features out of the driving experience?
