The European Master’s in Translation network has updated its framework for training professional translators, giving greater emphasis to AI and language technology. The 2026 version retains five competence areas and 36 skills while adding transfer and thematic and information research, EU Reporter says.
Why it mattersThe framework also stresses digital skills, critical thinking and ethics. Translators, it says, need to assess AI output and make informed decisions, not simply learn to operate new tools. Universities use the framework to shape master’s programmes; translations into all EU official languages are expected in February 2027. That is a practical shift from treating AI as a tool to treating judgement about its use as part of the profession.
Discuss: Should AI competence become a core requirement in language degrees, or risk squeezing out the human expertise translation depends on?
