Microsoft has added an experimental Advanced Performance Extensions (APX) setting to a Windows 11 Insider build, Tom’s Hardware reports. It is preparation for compatible Intel processors expected in 2027, not a performance boost you can switch on today: no APX-capable chips are currently on sale.
Why it mattersAPX adds processor instructions that Intel says could reduce the number of loads and stores in compiled code. Developers will need to rebuild applications to use them, so both compatible hardware and software support have to arrive before users see a benefit. A toggle ahead of the chips: sensible groundwork, if not yet a reason to upgrade.
Discuss: Should Windows expose support for new CPU features this early, or wait until compatible processors and software are actually available?
