Morrisons is ending its AI-powered smart-trolley trial at its Preston store after technology partner Instacart decided to wind down its Caper Cart business, The Grocer reports. The carts automatically register items on a built-in screen, but Instacart said retailer adoption had not scaled quickly enough to justify continued investment.
Why it mattersMorrisons said the trial was already nearing its end and there would be no financial or operational implications for the supermarket. A useful test of AI in the aisle, then, but not one that persuaded enough retailers to keep the trolley rolling.
Discuss: Was the problem with smart trolleys the technology, or asking shoppers and retailers to change habits for too little benefit?
