Manufacturers are testing ways to put workers’ experience to work alongside production data and AI. One practical example is a maintenance copilot at Rockwell Automation’s Singapore plant, which a Microsoft-produced article says helped cut new workers’ troubleshooting learning time from nine months to three.

Why it matters

The article also says a Toyota Industries pilot cut paint-defect analysis from five days to under four hours and reduced relevant defects by about 25%. Those are company-reported results, not independently established findings here, and the piece was produced by Microsoft rather than MIT Technology Review’s editorial staff. The useful idea is less “let the agent run the factory” than “give people better access to the knowledge and context needed to act”. That’s a more grounded pitch than simply adding another dashboard.

Discuss: In factory AI, should systems be allowed to act within validated limits, or should every consequential change wait for a person’s approval?
