A judge in Portlaoise District Court criticised a character reference compiled with ChatGPT after it was submitted on behalf of a defendant, the Irish Examiner reports. The judge said the letter’s contents did not make a convincing case.
Why it mattersThe detail worth noting is the setting: AI-generated text was being used in a real court submission, where a vague or unpersuasive letter can undermine the point it is meant to make. It is a small, telling example, not a verdict on AI-written legal material generally. A familiar chatbot shortcut still needs a person to check that the words actually say something useful.
Discuss: Should courts set clearer expectations for AI-assisted letters, or is it enough to hold the person submitting one responsible for its contents?
