Blue Planet III’s producers say no generative AI was used in the series, and that they are keeping some imperfect footage rather than smoothing away the evidence of real underwater conditions.
Why it mattersBBC Studios factual chief Jack Bootle said every frame was real photography, according to PetaPixel’s account of a press screening. Executive producer Elizabeth White said the possibility of AI imagery had made the team more interested in showing footage as it was captured. That is a small but telling choice in a moment when viewers are learning to question what looks real.
Discuss: Should documentary makers treat visible imperfections as a mark of trust, or is authenticity about more than how footage looks?
