South Korea’s environment ministry is launching an AI-powered pilot on National Route 17 in Cheongju to warn drivers when animals approach the road. Cameras analyse roadside footage in real time, then trigger nearby LED boards and flashing lights when wildlife is detected.
Why it mattersThe Korea Times reports that the system is intended to cover gaps where fencing and wildlife crossings are difficult to install, such as junctions and ramps. Earlier tests across three rural corridors reportedly detected a water deer and sent warnings to approaching cars. Cheongju is an expansion of the pilot, not evidence yet of fewer collisions. Officials plan to add another site by 2027 and assess long-term results before considering a nationwide rollout.
Discuss: Can roadside AI warnings meaningfully reduce wildlife collisions, or should the case for expansion depend on published results from the pilot?
