Kazakhstan’s science and higher education minister, Sayasat Nurbek, says universities should teach students when and how to use AI, while protecting their ability to think for themselves. In an interview with The Astana Times, he argued that AI should support learning rather than replace it.
Why it mattersNurbek’s suggested model is AI as a training partner or mentor, not an authority to accept uncritically. He says students should question information, weigh evidence and reach their own conclusions. That is a clear educational philosophy, not a newly announced rule for universities. Still, it gives the AI-in-classroom debate something more useful than a ban-or-blessing binary: what should students be expected to do themselves?
Discuss: Should universities require students to show how they reached an answer when AI is allowed, or is that too much process to impose on ordinary coursework?
