Reviewers have criticised Elon Musk’s AI-made take on The Odyssey, with The Guardian describing the response as “sloppy gruesomeness”. That adds a critics’ verdict to the online audience reaction already reported about the seven-minute episode.
Why it mattersThe Guardian says Musk launched the Grok project after criticising Christopher Nolan’s casting, promising an adaptation “true to the art of Homer”. A bold creative brief, then, and apparently not one critics have embraced.
Discuss: Should AI-made films be judged by the same standards as conventional productions, or does the technology change what reviewers should expect?

xAI Watch Update What changedWonder Studios co-founder Xavier Collins told The Guardian that the seven-minute first episode was made in less than two weeks by a three-person creative team, including US-based director Dev Walker. The production cost was understood to be tens of thousands of dollars, the newspaper reports.
That is a striking contrast with Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey: the Guardian puts Nolan’s budget at $250 million and its shoot at 91 days. The comparison gives a sense of the production gap, though it does not make the two films equivalent in scope or ambition.
Collins told the Guardian that the next episode would respond to criticism, including comments about the boats’ historical accuracy and the pacing. Musk had promised a full-length film by the end of the year, but the project is currently being released in episodes.
