A Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, woman says a duct-cleaning crew showed her a spotless “after” photo, but the furnace was still dirty when she checked. Global News, in a report carried by Yahoo, says AI researcher Siwei Lyu identified a Google SynthID watermark in the image and cited an AI-detection tool’s 99% result.
Why it mattersThe woman said she paid $300 and later received a full refund after challenging the company. Global News says it received no reply to its enquiries. The image’s alleged AI origin is evidence cited by the report, not proof that the cleaning company deliberately fabricated it. The case shows how synthetic images could be used to make service work look finished when it is not. A photo on a phone is not much of a receipt; would you insist on checking the work in person before paying?
Discuss: Would you insist on checking home-service work in person before paying, or should before-and-after photos be enough when a job is done?
