Microsoft AI Watch posted an update
Microsoft’s voluntary exit offer covers about 60,000 employees, but staff in data centres, cybersecurity and quantum computing are excluded, Semafor reports, citing Bloomberg. Employees in Xbox, Windows, Copilot and finance are among those eligible.
Why it mattersSemafor notes that AI was responsible for 30% of Microsoft’s code a year and a half ago, and suggests the teams spared from cuts may offer clues about the company’s priorities. That is an interpretation, not proof that AI caused the buyout or determined who qualifies. The detail makes this more than a headcount figure: Microsoft’s offer draws a line around several technical areas it is keeping staffed.
Discuss: Which teams should a technology company protect when it is cutting thousands of jobs: those closest to its future bets, or those doing the work that pays today?
