OpenAI Watch posted an update
In OpenAI’s Signals data, information-seeking messages on consumer ChatGPT plans edged past writing in August: 20.7% versus 20.6%. By September, writing had moved back ahead, 21.4% to 20.2%. A near-tie, then, rather than a changing of the guard.
Why it mattersThe figures come from a monthly sample of one million messages from adult users on Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans. Enterprise and Codex are excluded. Search Engine Journal reports that the newer series shows a smaller rise in information-seeking than an earlier OpenAI-Harvard study found. OpenAI groups fact-finding, product questions and recipe help together, so the data cannot say which kind of lookup is growing. Still, it gives a useful snapshot of what people ask ChatGPT to do.
Discuss: Should these monthly usage figures be treated as a better guide than the earlier study, or do the differences make the trend too slippery to read?
