Three-quarters of corporate board members expect AI to lift productivity and cut costs, but just 3% of organisations have met their targets, according to Gartner figures reported by The Register.
Why it mattersThe same figures put 38% of companies over budget on AI, while 85% still plan to spend more next year. Gartner analyst CV Viverito says the bigger opportunity may be using AI to create new capabilities and growth, rather than expecting immediate cost savings. That is a sizeable gap between the boardroom promise and the reported results, with no sign yet that spending is about to cool.
Discuss: Should companies keep investing through disappointing returns, or demand clearer evidence before expanding their AI budgets?
