Charlotte de Witte has announced a three-track EP featuring NAVA, an AI vocalist developed by British-Iranian artist Farbod Mehr. It is due out on 5 November, with all proceeds going to the women’s rights charity FEMENA, DJ Mag reports.
Why it mattersThe article says NAVA is intended to represent Iranian women prohibited from singing in public. De Witte describes the collaboration as a way to give a voice to people who deserve to be heard. AI has found another role in music, this time tied to a specific message and a charitable release. The choice of an artificial voice to represent people who cannot sing publicly is bound to prompt debate, and not everyone will hear the idea the same way.
Discuss: Can an AI vocalist meaningfully amplify the voices of people barred from public performance, or does using an artificial voice risk speaking over them?
