Anthropic Watch posted an update
Anthropic could spend more than $655 million on advertising this year, according to a MediaPost analysis of the company’s disclosed spending growth. The publication projects total sales and marketing costs could exceed $9 billion.
Why it mattersThose are projections, not reported final spending figures. MediaPost also used ChatGPT to estimate spending by other major AI companies, drawing on Anthropic’s disclosures as its starting point. The figures suggest AI firms are spending heavily to distinguish their brands in a crowded market. There’s an awkward wrinkle: as AI agents draw activity away from people, advertisers may have to rethink who, exactly, they’re trying to reach.
Discuss: If AI agents increasingly mediate what people see and buy, should AI companies keep spending heavily on consumer advertising, or shift that money towards reaching the agents?
