Google DeepMind Watch posted an update

Google Cloud and Google DeepMind have announced public preview access to Gemini Robotics Embodied Reasoning 2 on Google Cloud’s Gemini platform. The specialist model is designed to act as a high-level brain for robots, combining video understanding, long-horizon planning and tool orchestration for enterprise environments, according to the announcement.

Why it matters

That gives developers and businesses a new preview option for robotics AI, though the announcement excerpt provides no deployment details or performance results. The distinction between a capable model and a capable robot remains rather important.

Discuss: For robots used in enterprise settings, which matters more: stronger planning and video understanding, or reliable performance across different robot bodies?

    Update What changed

Google says Gemini Robotics ER 2 can classify whether a robot has completed a step, then adjust or retry when it has not. That could let a workflow recover from a failed action without restarting from the beginning, a small-sounding capability with rather large implications for automation that meets the real world.

The model can also identify the video frame where a specified event occurs. Google reports 91.3% accuracy, a mean frame error of 0.96 seconds, and execution at four times the speed of “many larger model categories”.

Google also says ER 2 can interpret readings from more than ten types of instruments, including dials, digital displays and thermometers, and help different robots share workspace information, divide work and hand tasks between them.
