Microsoft is testing per-app controls for camera, microphone and location access in Windows 11, replacing the old all-or-nothing desktop app switch. The feature is rolling out gradually to Insiders in the Experimental channel, with no general-release date announced.
Why it mattersIn Settings > Privacy & Security, users can allow or deny access for each app. Existing permission choices carry over, so there is no blanket reset; apps may appear under unexpected names if they rely on shared components, and some may be marked “Unsigned”. It is a small privacy upgrade with a practical advantage: blocking one app no longer means disrupting every video call on the PC.
Discuss: Should Windows make per-app permissions the default for everyone, or is the extra control more fiddly than useful?
