Leadership expert Erica Dhawan’s advice for working with AI starts with a five-minute pause: write down what you believe, the problem you are solving and what a bad outcome would look like before prompting. It is a neat way to stop a polished answer solving the wrong problem.
Why it mattersDhawan also suggests using AI to challenge a draft, then getting a human who knows the context to check it. For leaders, her advice is more pointed: do meaningful work from scratch each week and be able to explain the logic behind AI-assisted decisions without leaning on the summary. Her argument, in a CNBC essay, is that when AI makes polished work easy to produce, personal judgement and a clear point of view become harder to fake. Is that a practical safeguard against outsourcing your thinking, or just one more workplace ritual?
Discuss: Is writing down your own view before prompting a useful safeguard against outsourcing your thinking, or an unrealistic extra step at work?
